I have started painting people in acrylics on canvas, which works better for me than my attempts in pastel, because it is a more sensitive medium so is better suited to building up the transparent appearance of skin.  They do take a lot longer, and prices start at £250 for a 40x50cm canvas.

It is even more important for me to have a good photograph to work from for people, and it must be a good likeness, and one that you really like.  All I have to go on is the photo, so if you give me one that is not a good likeness, the painting won't be either.  Choose a photo that you can imagine blown up and on the wall.
